Frequently Asked Questions
About DAT Recorders
What is a DAT recorder?
DAT (Digital Audio Tape) is a recording format developed by Sony in the 1980s. DAT recorders capture audio digitally onto small cassette tapes, offering CD-quality sound at 16-bit/44.1kHz or 48kHz sampling rates. They were widely used by professional broadcasters, musicians, and audio engineers throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s.
Are DAT tapes still available?
New DAT tapes are no longer manufactured, but unused old stock is available from specialist suppliers and online marketplaces. Used tapes can often be bulk-purchased and bulk-erased for reuse, though tape condition and longevity should be carefully considered for archival work.
Can DAT recorders still be used today?
Yes — many DAT recorders are still in working order and are used for archiving legacy DAT tape collections to digital formats. A working DAT deck connected via its digital output (coaxial or optical SPDIF, or AES/EBU on professional models) to a modern audio interface or DAW is the standard approach for DAT digitisation.
My DAT recorder needs servicing — where can I get it repaired?
DAT recorders require specialist knowledge to service. The most common issues are degraded rubber belts and pinch rollers in the tape transport. We recommend searching for specialist audio equipment repair technicians in your area, or contacting DAT enthusiast communities such as Tapeheads.net or the relevant subreddits for recommendations.
About This Site and Manuals
What manuals are available?
We stock user manuals and service manuals for a wide range of DAT recorders from manufacturers including Sony, Tascam, Fostex, Panasonic, Technics, Pioneer, HHB, Otari, Studer, and many others. Not every model has both a user manual and a service manual available — where a manual is not yet listed it may be added in future.
What format are the manuals?
All manuals are PDF files scanned from original printed documents. Quality varies by source — some are high-resolution scans of mint condition originals, others are working copies scanned from well-used service documents. Where known, page count and file size are shown on each manual listing.
How does purchasing work?
Click the Buy & Download button on any recorder page, complete the secure PayPal checkout, and you will be taken to a download page immediately after payment is confirmed. A confirmation email containing your download link is also sent to your PayPal email address.
Do I need a PayPal account to buy?
No — PayPal accepts credit and debit card payments without requiring a PayPal account. Look for the "Pay by card" option on the PayPal checkout page.
How long is my download link valid?
Your download link is valid for 72 hours from the time of purchase and can be used up to 3 times. If your link expires or you reach the download limit, contact us at sales@dat-recorders.co.uk and we will re-issue your link after verifying your purchase.
Can I get a refund?
As these are digital downloads, we are unable to offer refunds once a manual has been downloaded. If you have a problem with your purchase — for example a corrupted file or the wrong manual — please contact us at sales@dat-recorders.co.uk and we will do our best to help.
Are the manuals in English?
Most manuals are available in English. Many models also have manuals available in other languages including German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and Swedish — where multiple language variants exist, a language selector is shown on the recorder page.
Can I request a manual that isn't listed?
We are continually adding new manuals to the catalogue. If a manual you need is not currently listed, feel free to contact us at sales@dat-recorders.co.uk — we may be able to source it or add it to the site.
Is my personal data safe?
We store only your email address, the transaction details, and your country to process your purchase. We do not store payment card details, your name, or your address — these are handled entirely by PayPal. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
